Pirates, and the Sad Truth That Rich != Smart

As a preface to this post, a friend of mine just started blogging a little while ago, and it would be great if you guys would take a look at his blog. He's sure to do the same, especially if you have some music posted he may not have heard. Check him out right here. (and no, the below picture is not him. He wishes.)

So, the Somali pirates strike again, this time killing 4 American hostages as american troops close on on the Yacht they'd hijacked. Full story here if you're interested.

Now granted, this is a sad story. Innocent people died while vacationing around the world in their yacht. With that said....wtf were they thinking?! Pirates are practically nonexistant, except for in that puny little area on the globe. Yet, these two geniuses decide it would be a great place for a cruise in their private Yacht. That would be like if I planned a family vacation to rural Afghanistan. You know, just to add some variety. I suppose there really isn't a whole lot else to say, but since nobody in the news is calling them out, I might as well. It's a sad story, but they were dumb. And highly deserving of this immortal image:

  4. I would say that our Navy needs to bomb Somalia into the stone age, but they never really left the stone age.

Sadly, that's pretty much the truth. I still haven't quite wrapped my head around how so much of Africa is so poor...

  7. @Erasumus because of exploitation of their natural resources by foreign countries and slavery.

Someone said it best (can't remember who):

    [Paraphrased]
"It isn't a coincidence that the countries in the world with the most natural resources are also the poorest as well."

Also, it really wasn't smart of those people to go yachting there. I guess they don't read the news or something.

That's what I'm told, but even then, that doesn't explain it, at least not entirely imo. South America was equally exploited, and suffered many of the same problems with disease, climate, etc. And while South America is hardly a great place to live, it's got Africa beaten by a large margin.

  9. 1) I must say, I do wish I looked like that guy. Noob Tube in one hand, radio in the other. It just yells bad ass. And 2) If they would've just said parley it would've been all good. Doesn't anyone know pirate code anymore?

  17. There was a British doccumentary about somali pirates last year...it turns out they are starving and hijacking / ransoms are their only income

Maybe they should apply to a McDonald's somewhere. Or at least a 7/11.
